Eligibility for Zakat

Shortened Question:

What qualifies one for Zakat?

Question:

How do determine if one is eligible for Zakat?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

One will be eligible for Zakat if one does not possess the nisab for Zakat.

The nisab of zakat is 612.35 grams of silver. (Contemporary Fatawaa – Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani; page 87), or 87.479 grams of gold. (Contemporary Fatawaa – Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani; page 97).

One whose surplus assets do not reach the value of 612.35 grams of silver or 87.479 grams of gold will be entitled to Zakat. Zakat may be paid in cash or in kind.

Attached is a chart that was produced by the Darul Iftaa.
