Does one have to remain for a fixed number of days in Makka and in Medina?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

It is not necessary for one to partake of the meat of the slaughtered animal for Qurbani. One may give all the meat away as a gift to whomsoever he wishes to.[1] However, it is preferable that the Qurbani meat be divided into three parts. One third for himself, one third to give to his relatives and the remaining one third to the poor and needy.

There is no fixed number of days to be spent in Makkah Mukarramah or in Medinah Munawarrah. However, Makkah Mukarramah and Medinah Munawarrah are sacred and blessed places. The more time one stays in Makkah Mukarramah and Medinah Munawarrah the more Barakat one will receive. It is advisable that one performs 40 Salats in Medinah Munawarrah.

The minimum number of days for Hajj is the number of days that are required to perform the rituals of the Hajj. This is five (5) days in total. Another day may be added if the pilgrim is unable to leave on time on the 5th day.

The First Day of Hajj – 8th Zul Hijjah[2]

It is Sunnah for the Imam to deliver a Khutbah in Makka for those intending to perform Hajj.

Before Fajr it is advisable that the pilgrim should:-

(a)Make Ghusl (b) Be in a state of Ihram (c) Perform 2 Rakats of Salat (d) Make intention for performing Hajj (e) Read the Talbiyah

The following actions should take place on the first day of Hajj:-

1)     Perform Fajr in Makkah.

2)     Proceed to Mina (the pilgrims should reach Mina before Zuhr)

3)     In Mina the next 5 Salats should be performed – (i)Zuhr (ii) Asr (iii) Maghrib (iv) Esha and (v) Fajr (for the 9th Zul Hijjah)

4)     The pilgrim should occupy the day with (i)Tilāwat of Quran (ii) Reciting Talbiyah (iii) making Zikrullah (iv) making dua to Allah TaBarakAllah (v) Performing Nawafil Salat (vi) making Durood and (vii) feeding the poor.

The Second Day of Hajj – 9th Zul Hijjah – Mina to Arafat[3]

On the second day of Hajj after Fajr, the pilgrim should leave from Mina and go to Arafat.

In Arafat the pilgrims would:-

1)     Go to Masjid-e-Namrah

2)     Listen to 2 Khutbahs

3)     One Adhan will be given after Zawal and the pilgrims will read Zuhr Salat in Jamat

4)     After the Zuhr Salat Iqamah will be called and Asr Salat will be performed in Jamat in the time of Zuhr.

5)     Those pilgrims who were unable to attend the Masjid in Arafat will perform Zuhr Salat and Asr Salat at the respective times.

6)     In Arafat one should spend much of the time making dua while facing the Qibla.

7)     Before sunset the pilgrim should leave Arafat to arrive in Muzdalifah in time for  Maghrib .(Maghrib should not be performed along the way).

Arafat to Muzdalifah

1)     Maghrib and Isha  should be performed together with one Adhan and another Iqamah between the two Salat.

2)     The night in Muzdalifah should be spent in ibadat, Zikr, Dua, Talbiyah and Nafl Salat.

3)     Collect 49 pebbles for the Jamarat in Mina.

4)     Perform Fajr in Muzdalifah as soon as the time sets in.

5)     Leave for Mina after the sun rises in Muzdalifah.

The Third Day of Hajj – 10th Zul Hijjah [4]

1)     Upon reaching Mina pelt the Jamrat with 7 pebbles.

2)     Sacrifice the Qurbani animal.

3)     The men will shave or trim their hair and the women will trim their hair slightly ( remove about an inch from the tail of the hair).

4)     After performing the above in that respective order them the pilgrim will be allowed to remove the Ihram and dress in his normal clothing.

5)     The pilgrim will now proceed to Makkah to perform Tawaafe Ziyaarah.

6)     Perform Saee

7)     Return to Mina.

The Fourth Day of Hajj – 11th Zul Hijjah [5]

After Zawal pelt the three Jamarat with 7 pebbles each, making dua after each Jamarat.

The Fifth Day of Hajj – 12th Zul Hijjah

The 5th day will be similar to the 4th day. Before departing to his home he should make Tawaf-e-wida.

It is preferable to leave Mina before sunset after the pelting is completed.[6] It the pilgrim was delayed he can remain until before Subh Sadiq on the 13th of Zul Hijjah. If he is unable to leave before Subh Sadiq then pelting on the 13th of Zul Hijjah will become wajib upon him.
