Question:
An old lady who was ill passed away at the age of 90 years old. During her illness she was unable to perform Salat. How should kaffara be given for those missed Salat?
Answer:
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
One should use his best judgement to determine the total number of Salat that were missed. The total number of Salat for each day will be six (this includes Witr Salat which should also be performed daily). The Fidya (Kaffara) for each Salat is calculated as 1.6kg of wheat or 3.2 kg of barley. The Fidya is equivalent to the amount that is paid for Sadaqatul Fitr.[1] The exact figure for your community may be obtained from your local Imam.
Payments must be deducted from the estate of the deceased before distribution, if the deceased had made a bequest. If the deceased did not make a bequest then any one may pay the Fidya from his wealth voluntarily.
Fidya may be given to the poor and needy directly in the form of charity. It may also be used to feed the poor.
The same rule will also apply for all her outstanding farz and wajib fasts.
