One Qurbani

Shortened Question:

Before slaughtering for myself do I have to first slaughter on behalf of Rasulullah (SAW)?

Question:

I was advised that before slaughtering for myself I would first need to slaughter on behalf of Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi wa Sallam and make another slaughter for myself. Please advise if this is correct.

If I do only one Qurbani who would it be for?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Qurbani is wajib upon a person who possesses Zakatable wealth on the 10th or 11th or 12th of Zul-Hijjah. The nisab of zakat is 612.35 grams of silver. (Contemporary Fatawaa – Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani; page 87), or 87.479 grams of gold. (Contemporary Fatawaa – Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani; page 97). Currently the Zakatable amount is R5, 825.69.

It is permissible to do one Qurbani just for yourself. You do not have to do a Qurbani on behalf of Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi wa Sallam.

If you are in possession of extra money you could do another Qurbani for your family or you could do Qurbani for Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi wa Salam.

It is very meritorious to do Qurbani on behalf of   Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi wa Salam. (Bahishti Zewar; pg. 371-373; Zam Zam Publishers; Ed 2005)
