Fear of Death

Shortened Question:

How do I get love for the Aakhirat? How much fear of death is healthy?

Question:

Assalamu alaikum, wa Rahmatulllah

Respected Mufti Saheb,

Hope you are well.

1) As of recent I have become very scared whenever someone mentions or thinks about death. A few of my recent friends have passed away and the thought of Sakarat really scares me, also the thought of leaving and losing my loved ones. This fear has lead me to start having panic attacks and is affecting the quality of my life.

I have many sins and fear any punishment, but I do not know how to overcome this issue.

How do I get love of Aakhirat?

How much fear is healthy for me?

Please kindly advice

Wasalam

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Death is a reality. A believer should always be conscious of death. That does not mean that one should not continue with his normal course of life.

Allah Ta’ala says:

Every soul shall taste of death and it is only on the Day of Qiyamah that you will be given your reward in full. Whoever is saved from the Fire and entered into Jannah shall truly be successful. The life of this world is merely an enjoyment of deception. (Surah Al-Imran 3:185).[1]

The panic attacks that you experience are possibly due to a medical condition. Accordingly, we advise that you seek medical help.

The love of Allah and the Aakhirat is inculcated by focusing on Allah’s love for us. Ponder on His qualities of love and mercy and make Zikr with these qualities in mind.

Insha Allah, you will experience an increase in your love for Allah.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
