Should I Have More Children

Shortened Question:

Should I have more children in this time of Fitnah?

Question:

Asalaam alaykum,

Alhumdulliah Allah swt has blessed me with 3 sons. I am contemplating having another child in the hope for a daughter. But this knowledge is with Allah whether or not He blesses me with another pregnancy or child, boy or a girl. I pray to Allah to give me what He thinks is best.

However, before I even get into that my own inner feelings are taking my ability to comprehend and put this into action. I am really worried and scared when looking at the state of this world and how day by day I feel we are getting closer to the day of judgement. My question is whether I should even consider having more children if we know that judgement day is upon us. There are many signs and the state of the world including cost of living is just going up. I am not fearful of poverty as I know Allah is the provider but I am worried about having more children when the world will end. Should I have more kids and put them through the pains and hardships of this world? Living in the UK there are many fitnas around us such as the LGBTQ movement so I am worried more children will be difficult to handle and keep to the right Islamic path. My heart and love of motherhood is making me want to have another child however when I think practically I am really worried.

How do you suggest I go by this dilemma? Should I be worried that judgement day will come upon us and stop having kids and raise the ones Allah has blessed me with or continue to live normally ? What is required from us as Muslims?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Alhamdulillah Allah Ta’ala has blessed you with three children. It is also commendable to see that you are desirous of having another child.

Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam is reported to have said that we should have many children, so that on the Day of Qiyaamah, his Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam’s Ummat will be the largest. Hence, we approve and support you in having more children if that is your desire.

Sister in Islam, a Muslim should not be concerned about when Qiyaamah will come. Instead a Muslim should focus on preparing himself or herself to attain success in Dunya, in Qabr and in the Aakhirat. Focus on doing acts that will earn the pleasure of Allah Ta’ala and thereby grant you Jannat in the Aakhirat.

Take note of the words of the Quran Majeed:

They ask you (Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) about the Hour, ‘When is it due to happen?” Say, “It’s knowledge is only with my Lord. No one can unfold it except He, at it’s time. It shall weigh heavy in the heavens and the earth. It shall not come upon you but suddenly!’ They ask you if you were aware of it. Say, “It’s knowledge is only with Allah, but most of the people do not know!’ (Surah Al – A’raf 7:187)

The Ayat of the Quran states that Allah Ta’ala did not give the knowledge of when the Day of Judgement will be to anyone from mankind. This knowledge rests only with Allah Ta’ala. We should continue to live our lives normally and according to the teachings of Dinul Islam.

Try to guide your children according to the teachings of Shari’ah, to the best of your ability.

We acknowledge your concern about this anti-Islamic movement of the LGBTQ. It is indeed a horrific and debasing movement. We advise you to frequently question your school going children about what they are being taught in school regarding this movement as well as any other Un-Islamic movements. Try to closely monitor and correct any wrong information fed to them by way of these movements.

We make Du’a that Allah Tabaraka wa Ta’ala will grant you children who are the coolness of your eyes and you also being the coolness of their eyes. Ameen.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best,

Mufti Saeed Ahmed Golaub.
