Imam Dyeing Hair

Shortened Question:

Is it permissible to dye hair?

Question:

Is it permissible to dye your hair?

Can one who dyes his hair be the Imam?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

It is permissible to dye or bleach one’s hair with any colour except black as long as there are no haram ingredients in the dye. It is permissible to use a colour that looks like black.

It is reported that Hazrat Jābir (Radiyallahu anhu) said:  Abu Quhāfah was brought to Rasulullah (Salallāhu Alayhi wa Salam) on the day when Makkah was conquered while his hair and beard were white as thagāmah (name of a white plant)upon that Rasulullah (Sallallāhu Alayhi wa Sallam) said: change this with something else and abstain from the usage of black.[1]

A person who dyes his hair any colour besides pure black may be an Imam on condition that he fulfills other criteria’s of being an Imam.
